Health Minister Dr. Elijah Muchima has assured continued government support for the UNAIDS office in Zambia following the agency’s announcement of a reduced presence due to funding constraints. The development was discussed during the 75th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, where UNAIDS Regional Director Anne Shongwe met with Dr. Muchima to address the sustainability of the national AIDS response.
Dr. Muchima explained that the UNAIDS office in Zambia will not close entirely but will scale down personnel in response to limited funding. “Most of these institutions have been dependent on American aid, and the American aid has…,” he noted, indicating that the reduction is linked to shifts in international financial support.
The Health Minister emphasized that the Zambian government remains committed to sustaining efforts in HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care, working closely with UNAIDS to ensure continuity in national programs. He highlighted that government backing will focus on maintaining essential services, supporting remaining staff, and facilitating partnerships that uphold Zambia’s progress in combating HIV/AIDS.
Dr. Muchima stressed that a collaborative approach between the government and international agencies is vital to ensure the national AIDS response remains resilient, even as global funding priorities shift. The government’s intervention aims to safeguard ongoing programs and mitigate the impact of reduced foreign support, ensuring that Zambia continues to meet its health targets.
