The construction of the 100MW Chisamba Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Plant is now 71% complete, with commissioning scheduled for May 2025. The $100 million project, which is expected to play a critical role in addressing the national power deficit, is being spearheaded by the Kariba North Bank Power Extension Corporation.

Financing and Workforce

CEO Boyd Kanchela revealed that the project is being funded through a combination of 70% debt financing and 30% equity funding. Currently, 750 workers are engaged in the construction phase, and this number is projected to double once the plant becomes operational.

Contribution to National Energy Goals

The project aligns with Zambia’s broader energy strategy, which aims to increase renewable energy capacity. Speaking at the Energy for Future Africa (EFFA) conference, Convener Hope Chanda expressed optimism about the progress, emphasizing that the country aims to add 500MW of power to the national grid in 2025.

Long-Term Power Purchase Agreement

Green-Co’s Head of New Ventures, Chikoma Kazunga, confirmed the company’s readiness to purchase electricity from the Chisamba Solar Plant for at least 10 years after it becomes operational. This agreement highlights the plant’s importance as a key contributor to the nation’s energy mix and a reliable source of clean power.

A Sustainable Solution

The Chisamba Solar PV Plant is poised to help Zambia reduce its reliance on hydropower, which has been strained by recurring droughts in recent years. By incorporating solar energy into the national grid, the project supports the country’s renewable energy goals while addressing the persistent power challenges.

With commissioning on the horizon, the Chisamba Solar PV Plant is set to become a significant milestone in Zambia’s journey toward sustainable energy and economic development.
