Government Reaffirms Media as Key Partner in Democracy and National Development

The Zambian government has reiterated its recognition of the media as a cornerstone of democracy and a vital partner in national development. Minister of Information and Media and Chief Government Spokesperson, Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa, MP, officiated at the Agricultural Commercial Show Zambia (ACSZ) Society Media Awards, highlighting the crucial role of the media in informing, educating, and empowering citizens.

During the ceremony, Minister Mweetwa commended the media for its professionalism, balance, and dedication to the public interest. He emphasized that a well-informed citizenry strengthens democratic institutions, promotes transparency, and holds leaders accountable. The Minister noted that open debate and recognition of divergent views are essential for democracy, national unity, and sustainable development.

Minister Mweetwa also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment where media can operate freely, responsibly, and sustainably while upholding ethical standards and national values. He highlighted the role of media houses in facilitating inclusive national dialogue, particularly during debates on Bill No. 7, and acknowledged their contribution to fostering informed public discourse.

ACSZ President Mr. Rene Lourens described the Media Awards as a platform to appreciate the media’s strategic role in amplifying the Agricultural Commercial Show. He recognized journalists for their excellence, creativity, and professionalism, encouraging those who did not win to continue upholding high standards.

Looking ahead, Mr. Lourens announced the Society’s historic journey toward the Centenary Agricultural and Commercial Show in 2028, marking 100 years of trade, agriculture, industry, culture, and national progress. He called on the media to build national excitement and dialogue around the centenary and shared that the 2026 Show will run from 29th July to 4th August under the theme “Fostering Trade and Investment.”

The event highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to a free and responsible media, acknowledging its indispensable role in democratic governance, national cohesion, and the promotion of Zambia’s development agenda.
