Zambian Government Urges Responsible Media at 23rd MISA Awards

Her Honour the Vice President Mrs W.K. Mutale Nalumango, represented by the Minister of Information and Media and Chief Government Spokesperson Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa MP, officiated at the 23rd MISA Zambia Platinum and Golden Awards in Lusaka on 20 September 2025. The event celebrated excellence in Zambia’s media industry and highlighted the sector’s role in national development.

Mrs. Nalumango reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for the media. She noted that media freedom has strengthened under the New Dawn Administration.

She urged journalists and media houses to avoid promoting hate speech, insults, or wilful provocation, stressing that professionalism in media requires responsible reporting that contributes to national progress.

The Vice President called for unity within the media sector, emphasizing that journalists, media owners, and media development organizations should work toward shared goals. She cited “World Press Freedom Day Commemorations” as an example of how collaboration can foster stronger partnerships.

Mrs. Nalumango highlighted the Access to Information Act of 2023, which empowers every Zambian to request information from public institutions, promoting transparency and accountability.

Government support for media houses was also noted. A three-year tax holiday on broadcasting equipment has been introduced to help media organizations modernize, expand their reach, and improve content quality.

She urged the media to continue promoting peace and unity as Zambia approaches the 2026 general elections. Mrs. Nalumango congratulated the award recipients for their dedication and contributions to a responsible and professional media landscape.

The 23rd MISA Zambia Platinum and Golden Awards showcased the importance of a free, united, and responsible media in advancing national development and fostering social cohesion.
