On Saturday, Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana officiated the Bulongo Mwanamuungo traditional fundraising music concert in Lusaka. The event celebrates the ILA people of Chief Musunga in Itezhi-Tezhi district, under Senior Headman Shalooba.
The ceremony, scheduled for November 2025, will be held under the theme “To conserve our cultural heritage and foster development.” This aligns with the Government’s commitment to preserving culture and promoting national unity.
Government officials highlighted that traditional ceremonies provide a platform for citizens to express and reaffirm their cultural identity. They commended traditional leaders for guiding communities toward a Zambia characterized by work, peace, and joy, united in its diversity.
To support traditional leadership, the Government has implemented programs including road construction, completion of Chiefs’ palaces, and increased subsidies for Chiefs and their retainers. These measures aim to improve the standard of living for traditional leaders while supporting community development.
President Hakainde Hichilema’s participation in traditional ceremonies reinforces the importance of cultural preservation and national cohesion. Permanent Secretary Kawana encouraged Zambians to support initiatives that promote unity and reject divisive messages, emphasizing collective effort in building a harmonious and prosperous society.
The ILA people have a strong history of fostering development and creating wealth. This year’s bumper harvest and the abundance of cattle reflect their hard work, investment, and commitment to a sustainable future for Zambia.
The Bulongo Mwanamuungo concert underscores the role of culture in development, serving as a bridge between heritage preservation and economic growth while fostering national pride and unity.
