Yesterday, Zambia welcomed His Excellency Mr. Li Qiang, Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, for a high-level visit marked by productive bilateral talks. The meeting reaffirmed the enduring friendship between Zambia and China, a relationship founded by President Kenneth Kaunda and Chairman Mao Zedong, and now developed into a Comprehensive Strategic and Cooperative Partnership. Zambia reiterated its firm commitment to this partnership and to the One China Policy.
The visit also featured the historic groundbreaking for the revitalisation of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA), undertaken in collaboration with Tanzanian and Chinese partners. This landmark project, long a symbol of regional solidarity, aims to enhance connectivity, boost trade, support industrialisation, and create employment opportunities for citizens in both nations.
Looking forward, Zambia expressed its desire to attract further Chinese investment in key sectors including energy, mining, tourism, agriculture, technology, and logistics. These collaborations are expected to foster skills development, generate decent jobs, and drive economic growth across local communities.
President Hakainde Hichilema emphasized that through these strengthened partnerships, Zambia and China are building a future of shared prosperity and sustainable development, reinforcing the strategic and cooperative bonds between the two countries.
