Yesterday afternoon, President Hakainde Hichilema met with China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) Group Chairman, Mr. Dai Hegen, and his delegation at State House. The meeting focused on the revitalisation of the TAZARA rail line, a strategic asset linking Zambia and Tanzania, with potential benefits for both countries and China.
President Hichilema highlighted the economic opportunities along the TAZARA Corridor, noting its significance in mining, agriculture, energy, and other sectors. He emphasised that modernising the rail line is essential to unlocking these opportunities and enhancing regional trade.
TAZARA is more than a railway. It is an economic artery envisioned by Zambia’s founding leader, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, alongside Chairman Mao and Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. Strengthened cooperation between Zambia, China, and Tanzania is expected to generate greater economic benefits from this shared infrastructure.
The President also confirmed that on Thursday, he will join the Premier of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Li Qiang, in signing documents to officially commence the TAZARA revitalisation programme with Tanzania.
During discussions, President Hichilema encouraged CRCC to prioritise investment in Zambia’s energy generation, underlining the importance of reliable power in maximising the benefits of the TAZARA Corridor for citizens and businesses.
This partnership marks a critical step in modernising the region’s transport infrastructure and strengthening economic ties between Zambia, China, and Tanzania.
