Zambia’s energy sector is witnessing significant milestones as President Hakainde Hichilema and his technical committee continue to push for reforms and investments aimed at achieving national energy sufficiency. Yesterday afternoon, the President convened a crucial meeting with the technical committee overseeing the energy sector to assess the progress made so far.

Energy remains central to Zambia’s broader economic transformation agenda. According to President Hichilema, sustained economic growth and job creation for the country’s youth remain top priorities. However, he emphasized that realizing these objectives is heavily dependent on the availability and reliability of energy.

One of the key strategies discussed during the meeting was the diversification of Zambia’s energy sources. For years, the country has relied predominantly on hydroelectric power, making it vulnerable to climate variability and droughts that impact water levels. The government has now set ambitious targets to reduce this dependency by exploring alternative energy sources such as solar and other renewables.

A notable achievement highlighted was the commissioning of the 100 Megawatt Chisamba solar project. This development marks a significant step towards enhancing Zambia’s renewable energy capacity and meeting growing domestic and industrial energy demands.

In the fuel sector, President Hichilema noted that key reforms like the introduction of open access policies are already yielding positive results. This is reflected in the recent decline in petroleum product prices, providing much-needed relief to consumers and businesses across the country.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s steadfast commitment to making Zambia energy sufficient. He underscored that continued investment, policy reform, and collaboration with stakeholders would remain central to achieving this goal.

With these developments, Zambia appears to be on a clear path towards a more secure and sustainable energy future, positioning itself for long-term economic growth and improved livelihoods for its citizens.
