President Hakainde Hichilema has called on Zambians to take greater ownership of the country’s development journey, warning that the era of depending on international partners to solve domestic challenges is coming to an end. His remarks come amid improving economic conditions, including declining inflation, a strengthening Kwacha, and falling fuel prices.

Speaking through Finance and National Planning Minister Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane at the official opening of the 59th Zambia International Trade Fair in Ndola on Saturday, President Hichilema said it was time for Zambia to build resilience and take bold steps towards solving its own problems.

“For many years, we have over-relied on cooperating partners to provide solutions to our problems. We thank the partners for their support over the years, but the truth is that many are now focusing on their own national issues. We must now step up and do more for ourselves,” the President stated.

The call for self-reliance comes at a time when Zambia’s economic indicators are showing encouraging signs of recovery. Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Chipoka Mulenga highlighted key improvements that are expected to ease the financial burden on ordinary citizens.

“We are seeing a drop in inflation, a stronger Kwacha, and lower fuel prices. These trends are contributing to a gradual reduction in the cost of living,” said Mulenga. “Government policies are bearing fruit, and this provides us with a solid foundation to grow our industries and create jobs.”

Held under the theme “Innovation for Sustainable Industrial Development”, the 2025 Zambia International Trade Fair drew participation from both local and international exhibitors. President Hichilema emphasized that Zambia must leverage innovation and entrepreneurship to transition from a consumption-based economy to a productive one.

“We must move away from being a dumping ground for finished products. We need to add value to our own raw materials and support local industries. That is how we will build a strong, resilient economy,” the President said.

Analysts have pointed out that the President’s message reflects a strategic pivot in Zambia’s development policy — one that aims to increase internal capacity and reduce dependency on foreign aid. While acknowledging the role of cooperating partners in past development efforts, the government appears set on fostering a spirit of innovation, productivity, and national pride.

As global economic uncertainties persist, Zambia’s shift toward self-reliance and sustainable growth marks a significant turning point. With promising macroeconomic signals and a renewed focus on local empowerment, the government hopes to inspire a new chapter in Zambia’s socio-economic transformation.

The Trade Fair continues throughout the week, with various panels and exhibitions showcasing Zambian products, services, and innovation. Stakeholders from across the public and private sectors are expected to engage in discussions on how to align business strategies with national development goals.

President Hichilema’s call for unity and responsibility serves as a reminder that Zambia’s future will be shaped not just by policy, but by the collective effort of its people.
