The Ministry of Defence, in collaboration with the National Museums Board, is in the final stages of preparations for the establishment of the Zambia Military Museum, a historic initiative aimed at preserving and showcasing the country’s rich military heritage. The museum is set to be located at Buffalo Park in Lusaka’s Chalala area.

According to a statement issued by Ministry of Defence Principal Public Relations Officer Paul Shalala, the museum will serve as a vital educational and cultural institution, offering the public an opportunity to understand the evolution of the Zambia Defence Force and the pivotal role it has played in the nation’s history.

The Zambia Military Museum is expected to chronicle the contributions of the armed forces in key areas such as the liberation struggle, regional and international peacekeeping missions, and national development efforts. Exhibits will include historical artifacts, uniforms, weaponry, documents, and multimedia presentations that detail Zambia’s military engagements and achievements over the decades.

Co-Chairman of the Military Museum Development Committee, George Mudenda, emphasized the importance of the initiative, pointing out that much of Zambia’s military history remains undocumented and underappreciated.

“Zambia has a lot of military history which is not documented and not appreciated by the public,” Mudenda stated.
“This museum will be a space to honour the men and women who have served the country and also to educate future generations on the sacrifices made for peace, sovereignty, and development.”

The museum is envisioned not just as a static display of military artifacts, but as a dynamic space for public engagement, education, and national pride. It will also provide a platform for veterans and military historians to share stories that have shaped Zambia’s past and continue to influence its present and future.

The initiative aligns with broader government efforts to preserve national heritage and foster patriotism through the documentation and celebration of historical milestones.

Once completed, the Zambia Military Museum will be the first of its kind in the country, and is expected to become a major attraction for both local and international visitors, scholars, and students.

The official launch date has yet to be announced, but expectations are high as the project moves closer to completion.
