Zambia participated in a virtual Extraordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government yesterday evening, chaired by President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa. The summit focused on reviewing the Fact-Finding Mission to Madagascar and its recommendations for restoring constitutional normalcy in the country.

President Hakainde Hichilema affirmed Zambia’s support for the mission and its proposed measures. He emphasized that upholding constitutional order is essential for stability and democratic governance in Madagascar and across the SADC region.

During the summit, Zambia was elected Interim Incoming Chair of SADC, a position it will hold until August 2026. President Hichilema expressed gratitude for the trust placed in Zambia and reiterated the nation’s commitment to fostering close collaboration with member states, the SADC Secretariat, and regional partners. He highlighted the importance of ensuring continuity and timely implementation of SADC decisions to promote peace, security, and socio-economic development in Southern Africa.

Analysts note that Zambia’s election as Interim Incoming Chair positions the country to influence regional policy and strengthen cooperation among member states. Zambia’s leadership role comes at a critical time as the SADC region continues to address political transitions, economic integration, and cross-border challenges.

President Hichilema’s statement underlined Zambia’s dedication to regional solidarity, democratic governance, and proactive engagement in resolving political crises. The summit’s outcomes signal a coordinated approach by SADC to address challenges in Madagascar and reinforce constitutional governance across the region.

With Zambia at the helm of SADC in the coming months, the country is expected to play a pivotal role in guiding strategic initiatives, supporting member states, and advancing regional stability and development.
