Namibia has expressed deep appreciation to Zambia for its consistent commitment to supplying electricity, despite the ongoing energy challenges Zambia is facing. This gratitude was conveyed during a bilateral meeting between Namibian Secretary to the Cabinet, Dr. George Simataa, and Acting President Mutale Nalumango in Lusaka on January 27, 2025.

Dr. Simataa acknowledged Zambia’s efforts to honor the 2020 electricity supply agreement, even as the country grapples with its own power shortages. He highlighted the importance of this cooperation, emphasizing that it has been crucial for communities in Namibia, particularly the town of Katima Mulilo, which relies heavily on power from Zambia.

“I’m also aware of the electricity problems that Zambia is currently facing. Despite the challenges, you still supply us with electricity. You could have decided not to sacrifice your power during a shortage, but you continue to support us,” Dr. Simataa remarked. He further illustrated the depth of this solidarity, pointing out that when Zambia experiences power outages, the ripple effect is felt across the border in Namibia, underscoring the close and supportive relationship between the two nations.

The Namibian official underscored the essence of “brotherhood” between the two countries, which continues to flourish through shared commitments and mutual support. He expressed his gratitude for Zambia’s unwavering assistance, noting that despite the difficulties, Zambia continues to provide electricity as promised, strengthening the bond between the two countries.

Acting President Nalumango reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to the agreement, stressing that Zambia would continue to meet its obligations despite the energy crisis it faces. She pointed out that the 2020 electricity supply deal is a reflection of the long-standing partnership and trust between the nations.

“The power issue is huge here but we continue to share everything. This was an agreement signed in 2020 between Zambia and Namibia, and you don’t give up on such commitments. As you have seen, Zambia is a reliable friend to everyone they work with,” Nalumango said, emphasizing Zambia’s reliability as a regional partner.

The meeting highlighted the significance of energy cooperation in the Southern African region, with both leaders expressing a commitment to uphold their agreements and continue strengthening the ties that bind their nations. Zambia’s role in providing electricity to Namibia serves as a testament to the country’s dedication to regional solidarity and support, even in the face of its own energy challenges.
