Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has officially dismissed the recent rumours of his death circulating on social media, confirming that he is very much alive.
Obasanjo made the clarification during the commissioning of the Old-Garage-Oke-Fia-Lameco road project in Osun State, an event attended by Governor Ademola Adeleke. The former president expressed his shock and distress upon waking up to the false news of his demise, which had spread rapidly on various social platforms.
“I heard the rumour that I was dead. I saw it on social media. I quickly told my children and my relations that it was not true and that I was alive,” Obasanjo remarked. He further condemned those behind the false information, stating that such rumours were not only disturbing but also a demonstration of how some people misuse modern technology. He added, “Those who want me dead, that is their wish but God still keeps me alive.”
Obasanjo also expressed his dismay at the idea of anyone wishing harm upon him. “Why would anyone wish me dead? Those who harbour such thoughts will not escape tragedy themselves,” he stated. The former leader’s message highlighted the troubling nature of spreading misinformation and underscored the importance of responsible use of technology in today’s world.
