UPND Alliance Chairperson Charles Milupi has dismissed claims that the United Party for National Development (UPND) has worsened the country’s situation compared to the Patriotic Front (PF) regime. Speaking in response to criticism from National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Saboi Imboela, Milupi highlighted significant progress made under the UPND administration, including an increase in the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and efforts to stabilize the economy.
Milupi, who also serves as the Minister of Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development, refuted the suggestion that the UPND is “perfecting the wrongs of the PF.” Instead, he said, “We don’t believe that things are worse. By and large, we know that we took over an economy that was shattered and failing to meet its obligations, including paying debts.”
Government Response to Drought
Milupi acknowledged that Zambia faced severe drought conditions during the UPND’s tenure but emphasized that no one starved due to government intervention. “The situation was managed effectively, and through our mitigation strategies, we were able to prevent hunger and suffering among Zambians,” he said.
Milupi credited the government’s proactive measures, including prayer initiatives for rain and targeted drought relief programs, for alleviating the crisis. He stressed that the administration’s focus remains on ensuring the well-being of all citizens despite external challenges such as climate change.
Addressing Criticism
Last week, NDC leader Saboi Imboela alleged that the UPND had worsened the country’s economic and social challenges. However, Milupi argued that the government’s achievements, such as increasing the CDF and working toward economic recovery, demonstrate their commitment to progress.
“Our focus has been on rebuilding the economy and ensuring that resources reach every corner of Zambia. Increasing the CDF is a clear indication of this commitment,” he added.
Public Reactions
The comments by Milupi have sparked mixed reactions among Zambians. While some have praised the UPND’s efforts in mitigating hunger and increasing funding at the constituency level, others remain critical, questioning whether the government has done enough to address the high cost of living and other economic challenges.
As the UPND continues its tenure, the debate over whether they have improved the state of the nation remains a polarizing topic. Milupi reiterated the administration’s resolve to deliver on its promises and urged citizens to remain hopeful for a better future.
The UPND government maintains that their leadership is steering Zambia in the right direction, with tangible achievements to show for their efforts. As the country grapples with economic recovery and environmental challenges, Milupi’s statements underline the administration’s stance that they are working tirelessly to build a resilient and prosperous nation.
