As Zambia commemorates Heroes and Unity Day, President Hakainde Hichilema has extended heartfelt wishes to all citizens, encouraging them to spend the holiday meaningfully—either in the company of loved ones or engaged in purposeful and productive activities. In a message to the nation, the President urged Zambians to use the day as an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of those who fought for the country’s political freedom and to commit themselves to the journey toward economic independence.

“We wish you a happy Heroes and Unity holiday. We hope you are spending this time wisely, with your family or engaging in something meaningful and productive,” President Hichilema said.

He emphasized that Zambia’s achievements as a sovereign nation are rooted in the courage and selflessness of national heroes who paved the way for independence. However, he noted that the journey does not end with political freedom. True honour, he said, comes in the form of personal responsibility and active participation in national development.

“Part of showing gratitude to them is by taking personal responsibility in the journey toward economic independence. This cannot be achieved by the Government alone. It requires the active participation of all Zambians in addressing our individual circumstances,” the President explained.

He called on citizens to reflect on ways they can better their own situations while contributing to the broader national vision of a more economically empowered Zambia. In his message, President Hichilema highlighted the importance of unity, especially in a country enriched by cultural and ethnic diversity.

“As we work toward this goal, let us also invest in preserving our unity. Our nation is blessed with rich diversity, and within that diversity lies the strength that unites us. It is this unity that will help us build a progressive and prosperous future,” he said.

Underscoring the national motto of “unity in diversity,” the President invited citizens to honour both national and personal heroes and reflect on the values of solidarity, hard work, and shared purpose.

“Take a moment today to think about how you can improve your own situation as we move together toward a more economically independent Zambia,” he said, before closing with a warm invitation: “Feel free to tag or mention your hero in the comments below.”

The Heroes and Unity holiday serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices that built the foundation of Zambia’s freedom—and the collective spirit needed to carry that legacy forward.
