Chief Chitina and Chief Shaibila have signed a landmark agreement with North Swaka Trust to protect local forests and participate in a Carbon Project. The signing ceremony took place in Mkushi, Central Province, with Permanent Secretary Dr. Milner Mwanakampwe represented by District Commissioner Mr. Jonathan Kapungwe.
During the ceremony, Mr. Kapungwe highlighted the government’s commitment to initiatives aimed at conserving natural resources. He emphasized that the agreement is expected to benefit local communities within the chiefdoms. “We are happy as government for we need to protect the natural resources, the forests for they are sources of our rivers too,” he said. “We are glad to see this partnership. The world is changing and we need to protect our forests.”
The initiative is part of Zambia’s Green Economy Agenda, which focuses on enhancing forest protection, reducing carbon emissions, and improving livelihoods for communities living near forest areas. By combining traditional leadership with private sector collaboration, the project aims to create sustainable environmental and economic benefits while addressing climate change.
This partnership marks a significant step toward Zambia’s commitment to forest conservation and the development of community-centered environmental solutions.
