The Minister of Health, Dr. Elijah Muchima, held a consultative meeting with members of the Resident Doctors Association of Zambia (RDAZ), reaffirming his commitment to open dialogue on matters affecting health workers and service delivery. The meeting focused on improving collaboration between the Ministry and health professionals to enhance patient care nationwide.
Dr. Muchima emphasized the importance of commitment, character, and professionalism among health workers. He noted that both volunteer and employed personnel play a critical role in the functioning of health facilities across Zambia, contributing significantly to improved health outcomes.
A central topic of discussion was the recruitment process for health workers. Concerns were raised regarding the use of the health workers’ database, with participants calling for fairness and transparency in recruitment decisions. Dr. Muchima assured attendees that the Ministry is committed to addressing these concerns while ensuring that recruitment processes remain structured and equitable.
Permanent Secretary Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi highlighted the benefits of the database system, stating that it promotes equity and accountability in hiring decisions. He noted that the system helps to ensure that positions are filled based on merit while reducing bias and favoritism.
RDAZ President Dr. Paul K. Chibwe and UPND Health Committee Chairperson Dr. Bob Sakahilu urged the Ministry to engage in broader consultations and consider alternative criteria to ensure inclusivity, particularly for health workers in rural and underserved areas. They emphasized the need for policies that reflect the diverse needs of the health workforce and the communities they serve.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from both the Ministry and RDAZ to maintain continuous dialogue, strengthen collaboration, and implement measures that enhance both service delivery and the professional development of health workers in Zambia.
