The Ministry of Health has officially launched the National Operational Guidelines for the Use of Portable Digital X-Ray Units, a pivotal move set to transform diagnostic healthcare across Zambia—especially in remote and underserved communities.
The launch was presided over by Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi, Permanent Secretary – Technical Services, who described the new guidelines as a major milestone in enhancing medical imaging accessibility and quality. “This is a milestone in standardizing portable X-ray deployment,” he noted. “It has the potential to revolutionize how we deliver diagnostic services across the country.”
Portable digital X-ray technology is being heralded as a game-changer in diagnosing critical conditions such as tuberculosis, trauma injuries, and other potentially fatal diseases. In many rural areas of Zambia, access to traditional radiology infrastructure remains limited, often leading to delayed diagnoses and preventable complications.
“This technology brings diagnostic services closer to the people who need them most,” said Dr. Lishimpi. “And these guidelines will ensure consistent quality, safety, and compliance with regulatory standards.”
The Ministry also expressed appreciation to its strategic partners, particularly Rocinantes and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, for their instrumental support in rolling out the technology. Their collaborative efforts have already led to significant success stories in districts like Chisamba and Chibombo, where early deployment of portable digital X-rays has drastically reduced diagnosis times.
“Portable X-rays are breaking barriers,” said Mr. Ryo Sato, Rocinantes Project Coordinator. “We’ve already seen lives saved through faster, safer, and more accessible imaging services in rural Zambia.”
The newly introduced guidelines offer practical protocols for healthcare workers on handling portable X-ray devices, ensuring radiation safety, managing patient data, and maintaining diagnostic accuracy. This structured approach is expected to promote confidence in the technology’s usage and encourage broader national adoption.
Health experts at the launch emphasized how the initiative supports Zambia’s ambition to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC), where quality health services are accessible to all, regardless of location or economic status.
With the release of these national guidelines, the Ministry of Health is taking a major step toward modernizing healthcare delivery, ensuring no Zambian is left behind in accessing critical diagnostic services.
