The BCM Open Chess Championship begins today with 210 registered players from eight countries. The strong turnout has made this edition one of the most competitive in recent years.

The tournament will follow an eight round Swiss format. It will feature elite, women’s and open sections. These sections give both rising and experienced players a fair chance to compete at the highest level.

Players from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Malawi have confirmed their participation. This field sets up a dynamic regional contest with several national champions and fast improving juniors expected to push for top positions.

Organisers noted that the growth in entries reflects increased interest in competitive chess across the region. They highlighted that the event offers a pathway for players to gain rating points, sharpen strategic skills and prepare for future international assignments.

Coaches expect tight battles in the elite section. Many of the top seeds have faced each other in previous regional tournaments, and their rivalry adds intensity to the championship. The women’s section is also expected to produce strong performances as several young players aim to challenge established names.

The BCM Open has built a reputation as a well structured event that supports talent development. This year’s edition continues that mission by giving new players the chance to test their strength in a professional environment.

The tournament will run over several days. Final standings will depend on consistency, mental discipline and accurate play in each round. Players are focused on delivering strong results and lifting their national flags through standout performances.
