Zambia marked a historic milestone with the official commissioning of the Urea Plant and the 85MW Power Generation Plant by United Capital Fertilizer (UCF) yesterday. The event underscores the country’s ambition to become a regional hub for fertilizer manufacturing and achieve self-sufficiency.

The state-of-the-art facility integrates modern technology that minimises emissions, reduces waste, and promotes recycling. It has created over 3,000 direct jobs, contributing significantly to Zambia’s economic growth and employment agenda.

The 85MW Power Plant, part of the integrated facility, is set to supply surplus electricity to the national grid, strengthening energy security and supporting industrial development across the country.

During the ceremony, officials also witnessed the signing of the $1.4 billion Urea Phase 2 Project, which will expand production capacity and reinforce Zambia’s position in the regional fertilizer market.

President Hakainde Hichilema congratulated the board, management, and staff of UCF for advancing Zambia’s fertilizer industry. He emphasized that the initiative will enhance national and regional food security while attracting further investment.

The commissioning signals a clear message to investors: Zambia offers a stable environment, strong infrastructure, and opportunities for profitable and impactful investment. The government continues to position the country as a top investment destination in Africa.

This milestone reflects Zambia’s commitment to industrial growth, job creation, energy security, and regional leadership in the fertilizer sector.
