Ms. Duduzile Simelane, Director of Social and Human Development at the SADC Secretariat, has urged member states to invest deliberately in young people’s health, focusing on HIV prevention and access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services. She emphasized the need for an integrated approach that positions human capital development at the centre of socio-economic growth.

Speaking on 8th October 2025 in Lusaka, Zambia, during the Joint Meeting of National AIDS Commission Directors and Programme Managers responsible for HIV and SRHR from the SADC region, Director Simelane highlighted the critical role of youth-focused interventions. She stressed that targeted programmes can prevent early and unintended pregnancies while promoting educational attainment among girls.

“If a girl remains in school for longer, she is likely to achieve a good education, be economically productive, and contribute to socio-economic development, rather than be trapped in the poverty cycle,” Ms. Simelane said. She called on participants to advocate for policies and programmes that ensure girls stay in school and access comprehensive SRHR services.

The Director underscored that investing in young people’s health is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic economic decision. By equipping youth with education, health, and life skills, SADC member states can strengthen human capital and drive sustainable development across the region.

Her remarks reinforce the need for collaboration among governments, civil society, and regional institutions to scale up HIV prevention and SRHR services for young people. This integrated approach aims to build healthier, more productive, and empowered generations.
