The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has announced the release of about K40 million to tackle flooding in Lusaka. Permanent Secretary for Administration, Dr Gabriel Pollen, confirmed the funding during an interview on Hot FM’s Breakfast Show on Monday.
Dr Pollen said the government is steadily mobilising resources to address flooding and other urban management challenges in the capital. He emphasized that the ministry is making progress through partnerships with various stakeholders in urban renewal initiatives. “We have developed a comprehensive Lusaka Regional Development Plan. We know that resolving the flooding issue completely will cost around a billion dollars and take between three to ten years to implement. However, funds are being made available from the Ministry to start addressing immediate concerns,” Dr Pollen said.
The Lusaka Regional Development Plan outlines strategic interventions to manage urban growth, improve drainage systems, and reduce the impact of seasonal flooding. The government aims to prioritize high-risk areas while ensuring sustainable long-term urban management. Dr Pollen noted that addressing flooding requires coordination among municipal authorities, national agencies, and community stakeholders. Short-term measures funded by the K40 million include clearing blocked drains, reinforcing embankments, and implementing emergency response mechanisms during heavy rains.
Urban experts have welcomed the funding but stress that consistent investment, policy enforcement, and community engagement are essential to prevent recurring floods. Residents in flood-prone areas have also urged authorities to accelerate infrastructure projects and improve maintenance of existing drainage systems. The government has committed to making incremental investments while pursuing the long-term Lusaka Regional Development Plan to transform the city into a more resilient and sustainable urban environment.
