The Bank of Zambia has begun issuing new K100 and K50 banknotes under the Heritage Series, completing the rollout of the updated currency notes. The move marks a major milestone in the country’s efforts to modernise its monetary system.

Besnat Mwanza, Assistant Director for Communications at the Bank of Zambia, said the new banknotes feature advanced security elements, unique cultural motifs, and designs that celebrate Zambia’s heritage. She explained that the notes are intended to improve transaction security, boost public confidence in the monetary system, and serve as a symbol of national pride.

The new banknotes showcase Zambia’s natural beauty and cultural richness. Key features include the flying African Fish Eagle, depictions of six major waterfalls, and advanced anti-counterfeit measures. Raised ink patterns have been added to assist visually impaired users in identifying the denominations.

The Bank of Zambia has already withdrawn K9.9 billion in old notes, representing 44.3% of previously circulating currency. The old K100 and K50 notes will no longer be legal tender, and the public is encouraged to exchange them for the new banknotes.

To support the transition, the Bank of Zambia has launched the Zambian Banknotes mobile application, available on Google Play and the iOS App Store. The app provides interactive visuals and detailed explanations of the security features, helping users distinguish genuine notes from counterfeits.

Ms Mwanza urged citizens to familiarise themselves with the new banknotes and report suspicious activity. She highlighted that the initiative aims to strengthen public trust in the monetary system and promote a cashless economy while accommodating those who rely on cash transactions.

The introduction of the K100 and K50 Heritage Series notes represents a significant step in modernising Zambia’s currency and reinforcing national pride.
