Johannesburg — South African instrumental collective Azania Jazz Co. has officially released their third full-length album of 2026, titled What Africa?. Arriving on the heels of their earlier projects Afro Jazz Nights and Between Africa’s Rivers, this latest 13-track release marks a dramatic evolution in the band’s aesthetic and creative trajectory.
The release is anchored by an unforgettable sleeve design featuring traditional patterned African garments contrasted by a retro television set displaying stark, monochrome static. The artwork represents a sharp departure from the warm sunsets and candlelit saxophones of their previous covers, signaling an entirely new direction before a single note is played.
Musically, What Africa? pairs modern dancefloor percussion with spiritual vocal textures and improvisational jazz brass. The production relies heavily on high-energy electronic house tempos, syncopated log drums, and organ-driven gospel chords, turning the entire album into a driving, danceable experience from start to finish.
The project features 13 sequential tracks, including “Free at Last, Broke at Last”, “Constitution”, “Helicopter”, “Prosperity Gospel”, “Another Church?”, “Cold Drink”, “Door to Door”, “Madlanga”, “Xenophobia”, “Abahambe!”, “Mhondoro”, and “Nashi Nashi”. Rather than dissecting individual track meanings or over-explaining the concepts, the band allows the rhythmic momentum and melodic arrangements to deliver a seamless listening experience.
By merging dance music structures with gospel harmonies, Azania Jazz Co. presents an album that moves easily between club floors and home audio setups, appealing to diverse audiences across generations.
What Africa? is available now on all major global streaming networks.
