Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana presided over the Zambia Institute of Public Relations and Communication (ZIPRC) Awards Gala held at Avani Hotel in Livingstone, an event that highlighted the growing importance of communication in national development. The gathering brought together communication professionals, institutions, and government representatives to recognise excellence in public relations and media practice across Zambia. The ceremony also reflected the government’s continued effort to elevate communication as a key driver of transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement. Kawana used the platform to reinforce the idea that communication is not just a professional field but a national responsibility shared by leaders and citizens alike. The event set a strong tone for how Zambia is positioning communication at the centre of its development agenda.
During his address, Kawana reaffirmed government’s position on the strategic role of communication in shaping national progress and unity. He stressed that communication must be treated as a national duty that connects leadership with citizens through consistent dialogue and shared understanding. According to him, effective communication strengthens trust between the state and the public, making it easier to implement development policies and national programs. He also highlighted that without clear and truthful communication, national goals risk being misunderstood or weakened. His remarks positioned communication as a vital tool for building cohesion in a diverse society.
Kawana further underscored government recognition of public relations and communication practitioners for their contribution to transparency and national development. He praised their work in promoting accurate information, strengthening public trust, and ensuring that institutions remain accountable to the people they serve. He also commended practitioners for upholding values of integrity, innovation, and truthfulness in their work, noting that these principles help shape Zambia’s image both locally and internationally. He encouraged continued professionalism in the sector, especially in an era where information spreads quickly and misinformation can easily distort public understanding. His message reinforced the expectation that communication professionals play an active role in protecting credibility and national reputation.
The Permanent Secretary also called on communication practitioners to present Zambia’s national identity with dignity, accuracy, and strategic intent. He emphasized the need for storytelling that reflects the real experiences of citizens in both rural and urban communities. He urged practitioners to use accessible language and platforms that reach diverse audiences across the country, ensuring that no group is excluded from national conversations. He noted that authentic communication helps citizens feel represented and included in national development. His call highlighted the importance of inclusive messaging in building unity and social cohesion.
Government, according to Kawana, remains committed to strengthening the communication sector as a foundation for national unity, transparency, and sustainable development. He stated that ongoing support for the sector will help improve professional standards and expand its role in governance and public engagement. The awards gala also recognised outstanding performance across various institutions, with some organisations securing multiple accolades for their work in communication excellence. Among the notable winners were ZANACO, FQM, and Infratel, which were recognised for their strong contributions in the field. These awards demonstrated the growing competitiveness and professionalism within Zambia’s communication industry.
Individual excellence was also highlighted during the ceremony, with Tigana Chileshe from World Vision named Best 2025 Public Relations Practitioner. The Best Female Public Relations Practitioner award went to Chola Mwamba, recognising her outstanding contribution to the profession. These awards reflected the importance of individual dedication and skill in shaping effective communication strategies. The recognition of professionals across different categories reinforced the value of continuous improvement and ethical practice in the industry. It also showed how personal excellence contributes to broader institutional success.
In a related development, ZIPRC also conducted elections during the event to usher in a new executive leadership team. Patricia Luhanga was elected President, while Nshamba Muzungu took the position of Vice President. Nicholas Nkuwa was elected Secretary, and Kyembe Kyalusanza assumed the role of Treasurer. The newly elected council members include Namakau Mukelebai, Brian Hatyoka, Penipher Sikainda, Posent Ndovi, and Katendi Wandi.
