Yesterday marked a pivotal meeting between government representatives and the Grain Traders Association of Zambia (GTAZ), led by Chairman Mr. Tembwe Mutungu, focusing on critical discussions around grain marketing and food security. This dialogue comes in the wake of a devastating drought that severely impacted agricultural production across the country over the past year.

Despite Zambia’s abundant water resources, the recent drought has been a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities facing the nation’s food systems. President Hakainde Hichilema described the crisis as both a wake-up call and an opportunity for transformative change in how Zambia approaches agricultural resilience and sustainability.

Zambia’s strategic position as a land-linked country offers unique advantages. The government reaffirmed its commitment to prioritizing domestic food security while harnessing the potential for value addition and exporting surplus agricultural products. In this endeavor, the Grain Traders Association of Zambia remains a crucial partner, bringing expertise and market access to strengthen the entire food supply chain.

One of the main pillars of this renewed agricultural vision is the adoption of innovative solutions such as irrigation, water harvesting, and renewable energy technologies, including solar power. These measures aim to mitigate the effects of climate variability and reduce dependence on rain-fed agriculture.

President Hichilema emphasized that Zambia stands on the threshold of an agricultural revolution. “By embracing modern technologies and sustainable practices, we can position Zambia not only as the breadbasket of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) but as a leading food producer across the African continent,” he said.

This collaborative approach between the government and stakeholders like GTAZ highlights a shared commitment to ensuring food security, boosting farmer incomes, and driving economic growth through agriculture. As Zambia looks to the future, these partnerships and innovative strategies will be vital in building a resilient and prosperous agricultural sector capable of feeding the nation and contributing to regional food stability.
