Workers at the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) held a thanksgiving meeting on Wednesday to acknowledge significant improvements in their conditions of service after a nine-year wait. The FAZ Executive Committee recently approved a new salary structure for secretariat staff, addressing concerns over critically low wages that FAZ President Keith Mweemba identified when he assumed office. Some employees were earning as little as K1,500, a situation that prompted the President to initiate a review aimed at improving livelihoods and motivating staff. With the Executive Committee’s approval, the new salaries were implemented, prompting staff to invite the President to a meeting to personally express their gratitude. The gesture highlights the importance of valuing workers who operate behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of football administration in Zambia.

During the meeting, Choolwe Moonga, a long-serving FAZ employee, spoke on behalf of staff, expressing deep appreciation for the long-awaited salary adjustment. He noted that for nine years employees had remained dedicated despite the lack of increases, continuing to support the administration and development of football in Zambia. Moonga emphasized that the staff’s commitment to the Association and the growth of the game has always been unwavering. Similarly, Bernadette Chola acknowledged the Executive Committee’s decision as a significant recognition of the daily work performed by employees. She highlighted that the salary increase would restore morale, strengthen motivation, and reinforce the value of the workforce contributing quietly but consistently to Zambian football.

Senior employee Maybin Sitali also praised the move, noting that reviewing conditions of service would encourage staff to maintain high levels of dedication and professionalism. The workers presented President Mweemba with an autographed and framed white Kopa jersey as a symbol of appreciation, underscoring the sincerity of their gratitude. In response, Mweemba emphasized that the salary improvements were intended to motivate employees and boost productivity across the Association. He thanked the Executive Committee for supporting the decision, noting that the approval of members was critical to implementing the change. The President further explained that the increment fulfilled a campaign promise he made upon learning of the long period without adjustments, demonstrating his commitment to staff welfare from the onset of his tenure.

President Mweemba stressed that leadership success depends on the collective effort of workers, stating that no leader can succeed alone. He encouraged staff to match the salary improvements with increased dedication and hard work, promising that better outcomes lie ahead for the Association and national football programs. The President also highlighted the potential impact of motivated employees on the performance of national teams, including qualification for major tournaments such as the World Cup. He noted that improved staff performance would contribute to operational efficiency, enhanced team preparation, and broader benefits for football development in Zambia. Mweemba emphasized that strong teamwork and commitment are essential for translating administrative improvements into on-field success.

In addition to salary adjustments, Mweemba outlined initiatives to strengthen the Association’s financial sustainability. He announced the creation of an ad hoc Commercial, Marketing, and Fundraising Committee tasked with raising significant funds to support FAZ operations. The goal, he said, is to secure at least USD15 million, with the potential to reach up to USD100 million, ensuring long-term investment in football infrastructure and programs. The President encouraged a diversified approach to fundraising, emphasizing the importance of combining strategic financial planning with employee dedication. In conclusion, the thanksgiving meeting reflected a milestone in recognizing FAZ staff, signaling a renewed focus on motivation, accountability, and collective effort to drive football development and national team success in Zambia.
