Yesterday, the Ministry of Information and Media hosted a high-level awareness meeting to discuss Zambia’s nuclear energy programme, regulatory framework, safety measures, and public engagement. The event brought together government officials and key stakeholders to ensure informed dialogue and national buy-in for the initiative.

Information and Media Permanent Secretary, Mr. Thabo Kawana, reiterated the government’s commitment to advancing the national nuclear agenda. He highlighted nuclear science and technology as critical for energy diversification and socioeconomic transformation. Kawana stressed that public awareness and transparency are essential to build trust and secure broad support for the programme. He also emphasised the Radiation Protection Authority’s role in regulating and protecting the public, workers, and the environment from potential radiation hazards.

Kawana noted the importance of developing a robust national infrastructure for nuclear power, fully aligned with International Atomic Energy Agency guidelines. He underlined the need for collaboration between the Ministry of Information and Media and the Radiation Protection Authority to ensure public safety, environmental protection, and effective dissemination of information.

Radiation Protection Authority Executive Director, Boster Siwila, explained that the Authority is engaging directly with Permanent Secretaries to strengthen understanding of its regulatory responsibilities. This outreach is designed to facilitate dialogue, align expectations, and guide approaches to public, community, and industry engagement on nuclear safety and radiation protection.

The meeting reflects Zambia’s commitment to responsible nuclear energy development. By combining strong regulatory frameworks with public education, the country aims to ensure safe, sustainable, and widely supported growth of its nuclear sector.
