The Zambia Tennis Association (ZTA) is advancing a strategic plan to build a sustainable future for tennis in the country, with a strong emphasis on grassroots development. ZTA General Secretary Joseph Siame shared this vision during a recent interview on ZNBC’s ‘Kwacha Good Morning Zambia’.
At the heart of the strategy is the ITF Junior Tennis Initiative, set to be implemented in schools nationwide. The programme aims to introduce tennis to young students, develop fundamental skills, and cultivate a long-term talent pipeline. By engaging students early, the ZTA intends to ensure that Zambia consistently produces skilled players capable of competing at regional and international levels.
Siame highlighted the importance of international exposure for young players. Team Zambia’s participation at the ITF/CAT Southern Africa Junior Championships in Botswana, among other regional competitions, provides essential experience and benchmarking against other emerging tennis nations. He stressed that while international competition is vital, it must be complemented by robust domestic development programmes to maintain a continuous flow of talent.
The ZTA’s approach also includes training coaches, improving facilities, and creating structured pathways for youth players to transition from school-level tennis to national representation. By strengthening these foundations, the association aims to enhance performance at regional tournaments and prepare players for global competitions.
Siame reiterated that the future of Zambian tennis depends on balancing competitive exposure with grassroots investment. The ITF Junior Tennis Initiative, alongside school programmes and regional participation, is designed to produce well-rounded athletes while fostering a culture of tennis nationwide.
With these measures, the Zambia Tennis Association is positioning the sport for long-term growth, aiming to transform tennis into a key component of Zambia’s sporting landscape and provide young athletes with opportunities for development, competition, and international recognition.
