Today, Luapula Province Minister, Eng. Nason Musonda, announced that the commissioning of the Mabumba 50 Megawatt Solar Power Plant in Mansa District has effectively ended load shedding in the province. The plant has already evacuated 14 megawatts into the national grid, significantly improving energy security in the region.

According to Luapula Province Principal Public Relations Officer Emmanuel Maseko, the restoration of power stability in Mansa and surrounding areas has allowed businesses and households to resume normal operations, fostering socio-economic growth and development.

The solar plant is a direct response to energy challenges triggered by the 2024 drought, which affected hydropower generation. It reflects the Government’s proactive approach, led by President Hakainde Hichilema, to implement sustainable energy solutions. ZESCO Limited, on behalf of the Government, met stringent timelines to ensure the project’s rapid completion, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to reliable power supply.

Since 25 December 2025, the plant has been feeding 14 megawatts into the grid, enough to meet Mansa’s current demand and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply in districts including Chembe and Samfya. Once fully commissioned, the 50 megawatt capacity will exceed Luapula Province’s approximate 30 megawatt demand, positioning the region for sustained economic growth and industrial development.

ZESCO Limited is also progressing with the construction of a permanent evacuation line to the Mansa Substation, scheduled for completion by April 2026. This upgrade will enhance supply reliability and efficiency.

The Mabumba Solar Power Plant is expected to benefit over 20,000 households and forms part of the broader 1,000 Megawatts Presidential Solar Initiative, which aims to strengthen national energy security and resilience. This milestone marks a major step toward ensuring consistent and sustainable electricity supply for Luapula Province.
