Zambia Sugar PLC has revealed plans to increase production from the current 400,000 metric tonnes to 500,000 metric tonnes. The company is implementing projects valued at $132 million to support this expansion, underscoring its commitment to growth and sustainability in the Zambian sugar industry.
Speaking at the 4th Private Public Dialogue Forum, Company Chief Executive Officer Oswald Magwenzi highlighted that Zambia ranks among the top 10 global sugar producers. He stated that the country should take pride in its world-class sugar industry. Magwenzi emphasized that the expansion will boost non-traditional exports, generating foreign exchange and strengthening Zambia’s economic position.
“Zambian sugar is recognized globally,” Magwenzi said, recalling his recent address at the International Sugar Organisation in London. His remarks highlighted the quality and competitiveness of Zambian sugar in international markets, reinforcing the industry’s strategic importance for the country.
At the Private Sector Day during the Public Private Dialogue Forum, Magwenzi delivered a forward-looking address on the private sector’s role in driving sustainable economic growth. He reaffirmed Zambia Sugar’s long-term commitment to the country through continued investment in production capacity, customer-focused infrastructure, and energy solutions designed to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability.
Magwenzi also expressed confidence in Zambia’s improving investment climate and the value of consistent dialogue between government and the private sector. He noted that collaboration through platforms such as the PPDF is critical to unlocking growth opportunities, strengthening local value chains, and contributing meaningfully to national economic development.
Zambia Sugar remains committed to supporting government initiatives, fostering industry partnerships, and maintaining its position as a leading contributor to Zambia’s non-traditional exports. The company’s expansion plans are expected to create jobs, increase production efficiency, and further establish Zambia as a key player in the global sugar market.
