Zambia Participates in 7th AU–EU Summit in Angola

Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, S.C., M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, represented President Hakainde Hichilema at the official opening of the 7th African Union–European Union (AU–EU) Summit in Luanda, Angola, on 24th November 2025. The summit brings together African and European leaders to advance strategic cooperation in peace and security, climate resilience, economic development, and global governance.

Minister Haimbe was joined by His Excellency Rev. Dr. Elias Munshya, Ambassador of Zambia to Angola, Mr. Tom Michelo, Chargé d’Affaires to Ethiopia, and senior government officials. The opening session featured key speakers including Her Excellency Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission; President João Lourenço of Angola and Chairperson of the African Union; His Excellency António Costa, President of the European Council; and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

The leaders emphasized stronger trade and investment partnerships between Africa and the European Union. Von der Leyen highlighted the strategic importance of infrastructure projects such as the Lobito Corridor, which will facilitate mineral exports from Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo and boost Africa’s agricultural exports to Europe. President Lourenço stressed sustainable peace, youth and women empowerment, and Africa’s representation on global platforms. António Costa reaffirmed the EU’s commitment as a reliable partner, while Secretary-General Guterres called for flexible support for Africa-led peacebuilding initiatives.

On the sidelines, Minister Haimbe held a bilateral meeting with Estonia’s Minister of Justice and Digital Affairs, Ms. Liisa-Ly Pakosta, focusing on Zambia-Estonia cooperation in digitalization. He also engaged with African and European leaders to strengthen bilateral ties and advance Zambia’s interests abroad.

Zambia’s active participation in the 7th AU–EU Summit demonstrates its commitment to African-led development, regional integration, multilateralism, and proactive global engagement.
