MultiChoice Zambia has announced that it has contributed an estimated $244.8 million to the Zambian economy over the past five years, underscoring its continued role as a major player in the country’s media and entertainment sector. The milestone was revealed as the company marked its 30th anniversary of operations in Zambia.
In a statement commemorating the occasion, MultiChoice Zambia Board Chairperson Bishop Joseph Kazhila highlighted the company’s strategic investments in technology and infrastructure over the past three decades. These investments, he noted, have been instrumental in expanding access to quality entertainment while also boosting the national economy.
“MultiChoice Zambia introduced satellite TV to Zambia back in 1995,” said Bishop Kazhila. “It recognised the need to bring high-quality video entertainment to the country and connect Zambians to the rest of the world through the best local and Hollywood productions.”
One of the company’s landmark achievements was the rollout of GOtv in 2011, which brought digital terrestrial television to a wider audience. This move included the installation of multiple transmitter sites, allowing for affordable and reliable access to local and international channels even in areas with limited infrastructure.
The creation of MultiChoice Zambia was made possible through a public-private partnership between the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) and MultiChoice Africa Holdings. This collaboration helped establish a strong foundation for the growth of the television industry in Zambia, allowing it to flourish and become more inclusive over time.
Over the years, MultiChoice Zambia has not only expanded its content offering but has also played a significant role in local talent development, content creation, and job creation. The company supports the production of Zambian stories and provides platforms for local creatives to showcase their work to regional and international audiences.
“As we celebrate this 30-year journey, we remain committed to growing Zambia’s creative economy and deepening our investment in innovation, local partnerships, and digital technology,” Kazhila added.
With a focus on both premium and accessible entertainment, MultiChoice Zambia continues to drive industry transformation and bridge the digital divide. The company also contributes to national development through taxes, licensing fees, employment, and support for local production houses.
Looking ahead, MultiChoice Zambia has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting digital inclusion, cultural preservation, and economic empowerment through the power of storytelling and connectivity.
As the company celebrates this key milestone, it remains a vital partner in Zambia’s journey toward a digitally connected and creatively empowered future.
