The Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) has reassured the public that there will be no shortage of essential medicines in the country despite the planned disposal of expired drugs and medical supplies valued at K129 million.
ZAMMSA Senior Manager for Corporate Communications, Bradley Chingobe, made this announcement during a feature on Diamond TV on Monday. He emphasized that the disposal exercise would focus strictly on medicines and supplies that are no longer usable and have passed their expiry dates.
Chingobe explained that the agency had anticipated the disposal process well in advance. “Our disposal of medicines and medical supplies that we will do will not result in essential drug shortages because what we are destroying is unusable. We are not creating any shortage,” he said.
The exercise will involve the safe and proper destruction of expired stock, which helps maintain the integrity and safety of medical supplies available in the country. This process aligns with standard healthcare practices aimed at preventing the use of compromised medicines that could harm patients or reduce treatment effectiveness.
ZAMMSA’s planned disposal highlights the agency’s commitment to ensuring that only quality and safe medicines reach healthcare facilities and patients across Zambia. By removing expired stock, the agency reduces the risk of counterfeit or degraded medicines entering the supply chain.
Bradley Chingobe added that ZAMMSA continues to work closely with suppliers, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders to ensure the uninterrupted availability of essential drugs throughout the country. The agency’s proactive procurement and stock management systems play a key role in maintaining adequate medicine supplies.
This announcement brings relief to many who might worry about potential disruptions in drug availability due to the disposal exercise. It also reflects Zambia’s efforts to strengthen its healthcare system through better inventory control, quality assurance, and transparency.
In summary, ZAMMSA’s disposal of expired medicines worth K129 million will not impact the supply of essential drugs. The agency’s planned, well-managed approach guarantees that only unusable stock is destroyed, while effective stock management ensures continuous availability of medicines needed for patient care nationwide.
This initiative supports Zambia’s broader health goals of improving access to safe, effective medicines and protecting public health by eliminating expired or unsafe medical supplies from circulation.
