The Ministry of Health of Zambia recently hosted a delegation from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lesotho for a learning visit focused on strengthening health service delivery through strategic partnerships. The visit aimed to share Zambia’s experience in leveraging collaborations to improve access to healthcare, particularly in underserved communities.

During the exchange, Zambia highlighted its partnership with faith-based health institutions, notably through the Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ). These facilities play a critical role in providing essential health services, especially in rural and hard-to-reach areas where government health facilities may be limited.

The Lesotho delegation explored Zambia’s partnership model, including the division of roles, service funding, and accountability mechanisms. Zambia explained that faith-based health facilities are fully integrated into the national health system, operating under government policies and priorities. This integration ensures equitable access to essential health services for all citizens, regardless of location.

Zambia also shared details on government support for faith-based facilities, including financial assistance, provision of medicines and medical supplies, and support for health personnel. These measures help maintain affordable, reliable, and high-quality services for communities.

The learning visit emphasized the importance of good coordination, regular dialogue, and joint planning between government and partners. Zambia has successfully applied these principles to improve service delivery in critical areas such as maternal and child health, HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and community health services.

The Ministry of Health underlined that strong partnerships rely on trust, clear communication, and a shared commitment to public service. While each country faces unique challenges, Zambia’s model demonstrates that cooperation, integration, and accountability can strengthen health systems across the region.

The Ministry welcomed the Lesotho delegation and expressed confidence that the exchange of knowledge will enhance health sector partnerships in Lesotho, contributing to better health outcomes for communities.
