As the election for the presidency of the African Development Bank (AfDB) draws closer, Zambia has intensified efforts to gain regional support, particularly from Botswana. In a significant diplomatic move, former Vice President Enoch Kavindele, alongside Dr. Samuel Munzele Maimbo, who is contesting for the prestigious position, traveled to Botswana to seek backing.
During their visit, Dr. Maimbo, who has already received endorsements from two key regional blocs—Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)—met with the President of Botswana, Duma Boko. The meeting marked a pivotal moment in Zambia’s campaign to secure Botswana’s support for Dr. Maimbo’s candidacy.
Enoch Kavindele, representing Zambia’s interests in the AfDB presidential race, expressed confidence that Botswana’s endorsement would significantly bolster Dr. Maimbo’s bid. “We are seeking to build a strong coalition across the continent to ensure that the next president of the Africa Development Bank has the experience, vision, and commitment to drive Africa’s development agenda forward,” Kavindele stated.
Dr. Maimbo’s candidacy has gained considerable momentum, thanks in part to his endorsements from SADC and COMESA. These endorsements reflect the strong regional support behind his leadership, which is centered on fostering sustainable economic development and improving financial inclusion across the African continent.
The meeting with President Duma Boko is seen as a crucial diplomatic step for Zambia in the lead-up to the election, as Botswana’s support could influence other nations in the region to back Dr. Maimbo. As one of Africa’s most influential financial institutions, the AfDB presidency carries significant weight, and securing the backing of key member states like Botswana is essential for any candidate hoping to secure the position.
The Zambia-Botswana collaboration underscores the importance of regional unity and cooperation in shaping the future of Africa’s development. As the election approaches, Dr. Maimbo’s campaign continues to gain traction, and his team remains optimistic that further diplomatic engagements will help solidify his position as a frontrunner in the race for the AfDB presidency.
