Kabwe, Zambia – President Hakainde Hichilema has officiated the commissioning of the Bayer Itaba Seed Plant in Kabwe District, Central Province, marking a significant step in Zambia’s agricultural sector. The facility is expected to enhance seed production, improve food security, and boost the country’s position as a key player in regional and global agricultural markets.
In his address, President Hichilema emphasized the importance of agriculture in Zambia’s economic diversification agenda. He commended Bayer for investing in Zambia’s agribusiness sector, noting that the state-of-the-art seed plant will contribute to improved crop yields, climate resilience, and increased farmer productivity.
“This facility represents progress in our mission to transform Zambia into a regional agricultural hub. Quality seeds are a key component of increasing productivity and ensuring food security, and we appreciate Bayer’s commitment to supporting our farmers,” President Hichilema stated.
The Bayer Itaba Seed Plant will specialize in seed processing, treatment, and packaging, ensuring that Zambian farmers have access to high-quality, high-yielding seeds. The plant’s advanced technology will also support the production of climate-smart seed varieties, aligning with Zambia’s efforts to promote sustainable agriculture in the face of climate change.
President Hichilema reaffirmed his government’s dedication to creating an enabling environment for investors and supporting initiatives that empower farmers. He called for more public-private partnerships to drive agricultural innovation and economic growth.
