Zambian football legend Kalusha Bwalya has officially announced that he will not be contesting in the upcoming Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) elections scheduled for March 29. This development marks a significant shift, as Bwalya had previously expressed keen interest in running after his controversial disqualification in the 2020 elections.

At a press briefing held in Lusaka, Bwalya’s spokesperson, Nkweto Tembwe, shared that the former FAZ president made his decision after extensive consultations and personal reflection. According to Bwalya, his withdrawal stems from concerns over the integrity of the electoral process.

Bwalya emphasized that he would not participate in an election process he perceives as flawed, stating that doing so would legitimize alleged irregularities. He expressed disappointment with what he described as a lack of transparency and fairness within FAZ’s governance and electoral systems.

As one of Zambia’s most celebrated football icons and the only FAZ president to lead Zambia to an Africa Cup victory, Bwalya’s absence from the electoral race has sparked widespread debate within the football fraternity. Many view his decision as a protest against the current state of football administration in the country.

Despite withdrawing from the race, Bwalya reaffirmed his dedication to the development of football in Zambia. He stated that his passion for the sport transcends administrative roles, and he remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote its growth and uphold its integrity nationwide.

The announcement has prompted mixed reactions. Some fans and stakeholders have expressed disappointment, viewing Bwalya’s decision as a missed opportunity for reform. Others have commended him for taking a principled stand on issues of transparency and governance.

Kalusha Bwalya remains a towering figure in Zambian football, not only for his remarkable achievements on the pitch but also for his contributions off it. While he may not be contesting the FAZ presidency, his influence and legacy in Zambian football continue to endure.
