Zambia has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening economic cooperation with Brazil following the Zambia-Brazil Business Forum and signing ceremony held in Lusaka. The event brought together government officials, investment promotion institutions and business stakeholders to explore opportunities for stronger trade, investment and private sector development between the two countries. The forum was jointly hosted by the Zambia Development Agency and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, ApexBrasil. Zambia views the engagement as an important step towards expanding bilateral economic relations and creating new opportunities for businesses in both markets. The discussions also highlighted the potential for stronger investment partnerships, joint ventures and increased trade across key sectors of the Zambian economy.

Officiating at the event, Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry Permanent Secretary Mr. Crusivia Hichikumba said the Zambia-Brazil Business Forum represented a major milestone in strengthening bilateral trade and investment relations. He said the forum and signing ceremony provided an important platform for stakeholders to explore opportunities for increased cooperation, investment and private sector growth. The engagement gives businesses from Zambia and Brazil an opportunity to better understand each other’s markets and identify areas where commercial partnerships can be developed. It also creates space for investors to engage with institutions responsible for supporting trade and investment in Zambia. According to the ministry, stronger business-to-business relationships can contribute to greater economic activity and create opportunities for sustainable private sector expansion.

Mr. Hichikumba also highlighted the opportunities available to Brazilian entrepreneurs seeking to enter or expand within the Zambian market. Brazilian businesses will have an opportunity to explore new trading opportunities while also assessing investment prospects through joint ventures with Zambian companies. Such partnerships could allow businesses from both countries to combine expertise, technology, capital and market knowledge. Joint ventures can also support the development of local industries while giving international investors a structured way to participate in Zambia’s economy. The government believes that these forms of cooperation can generate mutual benefits while contributing to increased trade and investment flows between Zambia and Brazil.

The involvement of the Zambia Development Agency is particularly important because the institution plays a key role in promoting investment and supporting businesses interested in opportunities within Zambia. By facilitating engagement between local and international investors, the agency can help identify projects with potential to contribute to economic growth. The partnership with ApexBrasil further expands the channels through which Zambian and Brazilian businesses can connect. Greater institutional cooperation can help businesses access information about markets, investment opportunities and potential commercial partners. It can also provide a stronger foundation for continued discussions between the private sectors of the two countries after the business forum.

Speaking at the event, ZDA Director General Albert Halwampa said the agreement signed would strengthen investor protection and increase confidence among businesses seeking to invest and expand in Zambia. Investor protection is an important consideration for companies when assessing whether to commit capital to a new market. A predictable and secure investment environment can encourage businesses to make longer-term decisions and consider expansion opportunities with greater confidence. Mr. Halwampa noted that stronger investor protection can benefit both international and local investors by creating conditions that support sustainable business activity. The agreement therefore adds an important investment facilitation dimension to the broader Zambia-Brazil economic partnership.

Mr. Halwampa explained that enhanced investor protection is critical to creating a predictable and secure investment environment. When investors have greater clarity about the rules and protections governing their investments, they can make decisions with a clearer understanding of potential risks and opportunities. This can encourage companies to pursue projects that require significant capital and longer implementation periods. Greater investor confidence can also support the expansion of existing businesses and encourage new companies to consider Zambia as an investment destination. Strengthening these conditions is therefore central to efforts aimed at attracting investment that can contribute to employment, production and economic diversification.

The Zambia-Brazil partnership also presents opportunities for cooperation across different sectors of the economy. Brazil has a large and diversified economy with experience in areas such as agriculture, manufacturing, energy, mining, technology and industrial development. Zambia can benefit from increased engagement with Brazilian businesses and institutions in areas where investment, technical expertise and commercial partnerships can support local development. At the same time, Brazilian companies can gain access to opportunities presented by Zambia’s growing market and its position within regional trade networks. The business forum provides a platform for both sides to identify specific areas where cooperation can translate into practical investment and trade projects.

Increased bilateral trade could also support Zambia’s efforts to expand its export markets and reduce excessive dependence on a limited number of trading partners. Stronger commercial links with Brazil can create opportunities for Zambian businesses to explore new markets while encouraging Brazilian companies to source products and services from Zambia. Increased trade can have wider economic benefits when local businesses participate in supply chains and gain access to new customers, technology and business networks. The success of this process will depend on continued engagement, effective investment facilitation and the ability of businesses to convert agreements into commercially viable projects. Government agencies and private sector organisations will therefore have an important role to play in maintaining momentum after the Lusaka forum.

The signing ceremony also demonstrates the importance of creating formal frameworks that support closer economic relations between countries. Business forums can generate contacts and identify opportunities, but agreements can provide the institutional foundation needed to develop those opportunities further. Stronger cooperation between Zambia and Brazil can help create a more structured environment for investors and businesses seeking to operate across the two markets. Continued dialogue between government institutions, investment agencies and private companies will be necessary to ensure that commitments made through the partnership translate into tangible outcomes. This could include new investments, expanded trade relationships, joint ventures and employment opportunities for people in Zambia and Brazil.

The Zambia-Brazil Business Forum in Lusaka has therefore provided an important platform for advancing the two countries’ economic relationship. Zambia’s Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry has made clear that the country is seeking deeper cooperation that can support trade, investment and private sector growth. The ZDA has also stressed the importance of investor protection and confidence as the country works to attract and retain long-term investment. With businesses from both countries exploring new opportunities, the partnership has the potential to strengthen commercial ties across several sectors. Continued cooperation between Zambia, Brazil, ZDA and ApexBrasil will be important in turning the commitments and opportunities identified at the forum into practical economic results.
