Environmental restoration efforts are gaining momentum in the Kalusale area of Chambishi in Zambia following a major acid spill that previously damaged farmland, water sources and local ecosystems. The remediation exercise is being led by Targus Limited, a local consulting firm working in partnership with Sino Metals, to repair environmental damage and restore livelihoods in the affected communities. The project focuses on land rehabilitation, water purification and ecological recovery to return the area to a safe and productive state. Early progress reports indicate measurable improvements in both soil and water conditions since the clean-up began. According to Targus Limited Director Montgomery Mulengeshi, five hectares of farmland have already been successfully restored in the Kalusale area. Each rehabilitated hectare has been planted with one thousand indigenous trees designed to rebuild vegetation cover and stabilise the ecosystem. The use of indigenous species aims to ensure long term survival of the planted vegetation while supporting natural biodiversity recovery. Mulengeshi explained that the reforestation process is central to restoring soil quality and preventing further environmental degradation. The planting programme also supports carbon absorption and helps re-establish ecological balance in the affected zone.
Water quality improvements have also shown encouraging results during the ongoing remediation process in Chambishi. Mr Mulengeshi reported that water testing now indicates pH levels averaging 7.8, which is close to the recommended safe range for environmental and human use. This improvement suggests that water treatment interventions introduced during the clean-up are working effectively. The restoration team has implemented multiple purification methods to reduce contamination and support the return of aquatic life. These efforts are aimed at ensuring that water sources can once again support both ecosystems and surrounding communities.
The project has also included the restocking of fish in affected water bodies to help restore aquatic biodiversity and revive local livelihoods.
