The Zambian government has intensified efforts to address illegal mining while reinforcing lawful and sustainable mineral development. Mines and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe announced plans to deploy trained artisanal miners in areas previously occupied by illegal miners. These areas include Mufumbwe and Mpika, which have faced persistent challenges linked to unlawful mining activities. The move aims to restore order and ensure local communities benefit from regulated mining. It also supports safer mining practices and better environmental management.

Minister Kabuswe stated that trained artisanal miners will help formalise mining operations in affected regions. This approach seeks to replace illegal activities with structured and accountable mining systems. By deploying trained miners, government aims to create employment while protecting mineral resources. It also allows authorities to monitor production and improve revenue collection. The strategy aligns with broader efforts to promote responsible mineral development.

Security operations have played a key role in reclaiming mining areas from illegal control. Zambia Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Zyeele confirmed that Kikonge Gold Mine in Mufumbwe District has been successfully cleared of all illegal miners. Zambia Army Commandos also shut down illegal markets operating within the mining zone. These markets were reportedly run by illegal immigrants. The operation restored state authority and improved safety within the area.

Beyond mining, national leadership has been credited with maintaining peace in the political sphere. UPND Deputy Spokesperson Elvis Nkandu attributed the peaceful Kasama Mayoral by-election to President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership. He said the calm environment reflected respect for democratic processes. Peaceful elections help build investor confidence and social stability. They also reinforce Zambia’s commitment to democratic governance.

The combined focus on security, lawful mining, and political stability reflects a coordinated government approach. Clearing illegal miners creates space for trained local operators to work legally. Peaceful elections strengthen trust in national institutions. Together, these actions support economic growth and social order. Zambia continues to position itself as a country committed to rule of law, sustainable development, and inclusive progress.
