ZESCO Limited has entered a partnership with Jigsaw Investments, under JIGSCO Energy, to develop a 100-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Siavonga District, Southern Province, at an estimated cost of $80 million. The project will be implemented through JIGSCO Energy Corporation Limited, a joint venture between ZESCO Limited and Jigsaw Investments, with Power China contracted to handle engineering, procurement, and construction.

Energy Minister Makozo Chikote reassured Siavonga residents that the project is a genuine development initiative, not a political campaign strategy. He highlighted that the solar plant is expected to generate close to 1,000 direct and indirect jobs, providing significant employment opportunities for the local community and boosting the regional economy.

Chief Simamba, representing the Tonga-speaking people of Siavonga, expressed gratitude to the government for bringing development closer to the community. He acknowledged the transformative potential of the project in improving livelihoods and advancing local infrastructure.

The solar plant is part of Zambia’s broader strategy to diversify its energy mix, expand renewable energy generation, and support sustainable development. Officials emphasized that the initiative will enhance electricity supply, contribute to national energy security, and strengthen ZESCO’s capacity to meet growing demand.

By combining local partnerships with international expertise, the project reflects Zambia’s commitment to promoting green energy, creating employment, and stimulating socio-economic growth in underdeveloped regions. The Siavonga solar plant is expected to become a key milestone in the country’s renewable energy agenda.
