The Zambia Futsal National Team closed their two-game international friendly series against South Africa with a 3-1 victory on Sunday at the Automotive Futsal Arena. The matches were part of preparations for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
After a commanding 10-0 win on Friday, the Andrea Cristoforetti-coached side secured a second win over South Africa in a more competitive encounter. Skipper Chota Chileshe scored twice, while James Zulu added a third goal. South Africa pulled one back through Ingram Zulu, but Zambia held on to claim the win.
The victories highlight Zambia’s growing strength in futsal. The team competed at the 2024 Futsal AFCON and recently took part in the Thailand Invitational Tournament, gaining valuable international exposure and experience.
Futsal is a fast-paced, 5-a-side indoor version of football recognized by FIFA. Played on a hard court with a smaller, low-bounce ball, the game emphasizes technical skill, quick thinking, and close control in tight spaces. Many legendary players, including Pelé, credit futsal for developing their technique in youth football. The name “futsal” originates from the Spanish and Portuguese words for “hall” (sala) and “football” (fútbol/futebol).
Zambia’s performance in the two friendlies demonstrates their readiness for the upcoming qualifiers and reinforces the team’s ambition to make a strong impact in African futsal competitions.
