Zambia U17 Boys, the Junior Chipolopolo, are set to make their FIFA U17 World Cup debut tomorrow in Doha, Qatar, against Indonesia, also known as the Young Garuda. Head Coach Dennis Makinka has predicted a tough opening fixture, stressing the need for a strong tactical approach.
Speaking to FAZ Media, Makinka acknowledged Indonesia’s experience, noting that they participated in the 2023 edition of the tournament. “Coming into this World Cup as first-timers and Indonesia having participated before, it’s quite a big challenge. They have tested the waters, and this will be our first time. Of course, we have a plan; we’ve watched them play in the qualifiers,” he said.
Makinka added that he would not focus on Indonesia’s winless record in recent friendlies but will prioritize tomorrow’s match. A few knocks picked up in training may prompt minor adjustments, though the coach is likely to stick to his trusted starting eleven.
Based on recent friendlies against Mexico and New Caledonia, goalkeeper Christo Chitambala is expected to start, with a defensive line featuring James Neene Sibeene, Levison Banda, Andrew Mwape, and Jonathan Kalimina. Midfield options include Felix Phiri and Spain-based Lukonde Mwale, with Bongani Ndhlovu and Chimwemwe Nkotami competing for starting roles. Mapalo Simute is set to operate on the left wing, while Kelvin Chipelu could feature on the right.
Up front, Abel Salim Nyirongo is the leading striker, with Daniel Silubonde and Billy Daka available as alternatives. The team’s strategy will focus on pace, movement, and exploiting gaps in the Indonesian defence.
The match kicks off at 18:45 local time (17:45 Zambian time) on Pitch 7, one of the natural turf fields at the Aspire Zone in Doha. Zambia will aim to start their World Cup journey with a strong performance and set the tone for their first appearance on football’s global stage.
