The Lusaka-Mongu Road rehabilitation project is advancing steadily, with the Road Development Agency (RDA) reporting key milestones. China Geo-Engineering Corporation, in joint venture with Chipangano Builders Limited, is leading the rehabilitation of approximately 87.3 kilometres of the M9 road, stretching from Tateyoyo Gate to Katunda/Lukulu Junction in Western Province. The project is valued at K1,302,738,379.32, VAT inclusive, and is scheduled for completion over 30 months, from June 24, 2024, to December 24, 2026.

An asphalt plant was established at the base camp in October 2025, and hot mix asphalt concrete is now being delivered on site. The paver machine has the capacity to lay the full 9.8-metre width without forming longitudinal joints along the centreline. Significant progress has been achieved, including 2.2 kilometres of asphalt surfacing, 8.65 kilometres of prime coat, 2.5 kilometres of crushed stone base course, and 3.5 kilometres of cement stabilized subbase course.

Work has also advanced on rock filling in dambo areas, earthworks, diversion channels, and drainage structures. The rehabilitation involves widening the existing bituminous road, clearing sites, extending and constructing new drainage systems, repairing bridges with erosion and scour protection, and establishing new pavement layers.

The project includes the installation of road signs, markings, guardrails, and other essential safety features, while adhering to environmental protection standards. Once complete, the upgraded Lusaka-Mongu Road will improve connectivity, enhance transport efficiency, and support regional trade and economic growth.
