The Zambia Under-17 boys are set to take on Mexico U17 in a friendly match today at the Al Hamriya Cultural and Sports Club in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Kick-off is scheduled for 19:00 local time (18:00 Zambian time).

Coach Dennis Makinka intends to use this match to fine-tune his team’s defensive organization ahead of the FIFA U17 World Cup. While the Junior Chipolopolo have shown strong attacking form in previous warm-up matches in Lusaka, they have also conceded several goals, prompting Makinka to focus on ball retention and defensive discipline.

Makinka described the clash against Mexico as a stern test, noting the quality of the opposition. “Mexico is a very tough side, and we are approaching this match as a mini World Cup game. You know we’ll be facing Brazil at the World Cup, and Mexico play a style of football that’s quite similar to Brazil’s,” he said.

He added that the team has been improving steadily in training, particularly in ball retention, and he has seen positive responses from the players in recent sessions.

In goal, Christo Chitambala is expected to start ahead of Wiseman Nkumbu Nyirenda, with Rogers Simumba also available for selection. The defensive line will rely on the leadership and composure of captain Jonathan Moomba Kalimina. Other defenders in contention include James Nene Sibene, Andrew Mwape, Levison Banda, and Pablo Ndalama.

In midfield, Makinka has a strong selection pool, including Nthasilwe Malupande, Nelson Chilemu, Mike Bwalya, Steven Lungu, Felix Phiri, and Mapalo Simute. Additional options in central midfield are Gabriel Phiri, Bongani Ndhlovu, Lukonde Mwale, Nkotami Chimwemwe, and Kelvin Chipelu.

Up front, the coach has an attacking lineup featuring Abel Salim Nyirongo, Billy Daka, Daniel Silubonde, and Caleb Musonda, giving him multiple options to break down Mexico’s defense.

This friendly offers Zambia a chance to test their tactical readiness and defensive cohesion against a strong opponent, providing valuable preparation before the team faces Brazil and other top sides at the FIFA U17 World Cup.
