The Minister of Tourism, Honourable Rodney Sikumba, MP, has reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with the Republic of Uganda, emphasizing mutual respect, shared values, and a common vision for sustainable development and Pan-African solidarity.

Speaking at a reception to mark Uganda’s 63rd Independence Anniversary at Pamodzi Hotel, Honourable Sikumba highlighted the enduring partnership between the two nations, noting that cooperation continues to grow across multiple sectors of the economy. He said the relationship is guided by a spirit of collaboration and shared progress.

Honourable Sikumba noted that both Zambia and Uganda draw inspiration from Pan-African ideals and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which envisions an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful continent. Through regional frameworks such as COMESA and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the two countries are contributing to economic integration and global competitiveness.

He commended Uganda’s post-independence achievements, describing its journey as “a powerful story of resilience, transformation, and progress,” which reflects the broader aspirations of a united Africa. He also welcomed the commencement of Uganda Airlines flights to Lusaka, calling it a milestone in enhancing connectivity, collaboration, and people-to-people interactions.

“Aviation is central to transforming Africa’s economies by improving mobility, expanding tourism, facilitating trade, and connecting people, cultures, and ideas,” Honourable Sikumba said. He added that Zambia looks forward to deeper collaboration with Uganda based on shared values of peace and prosperity.

Uganda’s High Commissioner to Zambia, His Excellency Amb. Col (Rtd) Fred Mwesigye, expressed gratitude for the strong and enduring brotherhood between the two countries, rooted in history and a shared vision for an integrated and prosperous Africa.

Ambassador Mwesigye highlighted Uganda’s robust economic growth, noting that the economy currently stands at USD 66.9 billion and is projected to reach nearly USD 200 billion (PPP) by June 2026, driven by investments in infrastructure, energy, industrialization, and innovation. He also paid tribute to Zambia’s support of Uganda’s freedom fighters during the liberation struggle, describing it as a testament to Zambia’s solidarity and commitment to Africa’s self-determination.

The High Commissioner called for enhanced cooperation in joint tourism promotion, training, and exchange programs, emphasizing opportunities for multi-destination marketing and cultural tourism. He referenced Uganda’s first Tourism Roadshow held last week as an example of potential collaboration between the two nations.

The celebration underscored the shared commitment of Zambia and Uganda to Pan-African ideals, sustainable development, and strengthened economic and cultural ties.
