Zambia officially launched the 2025 National MSMEs and Cooperatives Indaba at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre. The event is themed “Building Resilient and Competitive MSMEs and Cooperatives for the AfCFTA” and aims to strengthen the role of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and cooperatives in economic growth and job creation. President Hakainde Hichilema led the opening, emphasizing the government’s commitment to transforming Zambia’s economic landscape. The Indaba provides a platform for dialogue, capacity building, and policy alignment.

MSMEs are the backbone of Zambia’s economy, and the government is implementing reforms to support their growth. Key initiatives include digitalising and decentralising company registration and licensing to make it easier for citizens to start and manage businesses. These reforms aim to remove barriers and expand access to both local and international markets. By simplifying these processes, the government hopes to create an environment where businesses can thrive and contribute to economic development.

President Hichilema urged MSMEs to focus on quality and efficiency in their operations. Prioritizing high standards will enable Zambian businesses to attract both domestic and international customers. At the same time, the government continues to stabilise key economic fundamentals and invest in alternative energy to address persistent power challenges. These measures are designed to support businesses and ensure sustainable growth across all sectors of the economy.

The president also highlighted the role of banks and private sector partners in advancing Zambia’s industrial revolution. Their support is critical for expanding access to financing, resources, and technical expertise for MSMEs and cooperatives. President Hichilema called for continued collaboration to build a stronger, more inclusive economy that benefits all citizens. The government remains committed to supporting resilient enterprises that can compete successfully within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The 2025 National MSMEs and Cooperatives Indaba is expected to inspire innovation, attract investment, and strengthen the competitiveness of Zambian businesses. It provides an opportunity for entrepreneurs to network, learn, and align with national economic priorities. With sustained effort and partnership, Zambia aims to accelerate industrialisation, create more jobs, and ensure lasting economic prosperity for its people. President Hichilema concluded by reaffirming the government’s vision of a transformed economy driven by dynamic MSMEs and cooperatives.
