Lumezi Town Council has recovered more than K420,000 from Constituency Development Fund (CDF) empowerment loan defaulters following legal action. Last month, the council filed lawsuits against 34 defaulters in the Chipata Subordinate Court to recover K1,463,776.35 in unpaid arrears.
In a statement issued yesterday, Assistant Public Relations Officer Irvin Muyumbwa confirmed that within 22 days, 18 CDF loan beneficiaries had repaid a total of K420,822.07 toward their outstanding balances. “Lumezi Town Council has made recoveries of more than K420,000 from Constituency Development Fund (CDF) empowerment loan defaulters after they were sued in the Chipata Subordinate Court in August this year for failure to repay public funds,” Muyumbwa said.
The recovered funds represent an important step toward ensuring that public resources are used as intended. The council emphasized that CDF empowerment loans are meant to support local development initiatives and empower beneficiaries, and prompt repayment is crucial for sustaining the program.
Legal action against defaulters demonstrates the council’s commitment to accountability and proper management of public funds. Authorities have warned other loan beneficiaries that failure to repay CDF funds may result in similar court action.
The Lumezi Town Council continues to monitor repayments and encourages all CDF loan recipients to fulfill their obligations to support community development projects and maintain access to future funding.
