The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has announced an increase in fuel prices for September, raising petrol from K28 to K29.18 per litre and diesel from K23.13 to K25.02 per litre. Kerosene and Jet A-1 prices were also adjusted upwards, from K21.98 to K23.64 and K23.94 to K25.83 per litre, respectively.

In a statement released on Sunday, ERB Board Chairperson James Banda attributed the price hike to the depreciation of the Kwacha. “Since the last fuel price review on 31st July 2025, the Kwacha depreciated against the United States Dollar by 2.50 percent, from K23.23/US$ to K23.81/US$,” Banda explained.

Banda further noted that premiums on the Tanzanian Bulk Procurement System (BPS) contributed to the increase. Petrol premiums rose by 17.27 percent, while diesel premiums increased by 5.63 percent. Kerosene and Jet A-1 also experienced price adjustments due to similar market factors.

The ERB review reflects fluctuations in global fuel markets and the local currency, which directly impact retail pump prices. The board said it continues to monitor exchange rates and international fuel prices to ensure timely and transparent adjustments.

Consumers are advised to expect higher fuel costs at filling stations across the country starting this month. The increase is part of the regulatory framework that links fuel pump prices to international market trends and the exchange rate of the Kwacha.

The ERB emphasized that these adjustments are necessary to maintain stability in the energy sector while safeguarding supply and protecting consumer interests.
